Hidden Door Bookcase
CATEGORY: Hidden Door Bookcase Counters DATE: October 2021 LOCATION: Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Using design intent sketches provided by an architect, client discussions, and site surveys DSJ was able to develop a working design for a break-fronted bookcase with three concealed doors situated in a reading room. The bookcase was to be in a traditional style with a bespoke frieze and cornice. Due to the depth of the bookcase a bespoke hinging system was developed to allow the door to open on a pivot and castor system.
The bookcase was produced from oak veneered birch ply with solid oak lippings and mouldings, stained to match an oak sample provided by the client. To ensure the heavy doors would open with ease the bookcase was erected and tested in our joinery workshop.
The bookcase was dismantled, delivered to site and erected insitu by our expert team of carpenters and fitters who ensured the joinery was seamlessly integrated with the rooms existing skirting, picture rail, architrave and cornice.
Upon installation and first use the client was so impressed with the outcome that they requested DSJ to work the concealed bookcase doors into several of their other pieces of cabinetry and joinery. The bookcase is now fully fitted out with books and ornaments and the concealed doors continues to amaze and surprise house guests.
